TL;DR: unit stops working. Random characters appear everywhere on screen. Bad RAM on CPU board. Substitute RAM. Unit works again.
The long and boring story: I repaired this logic analyzer about five month ago. No photographs because the ones I did turned out to be too dark and out of focus.
I bought it, I tried it, it worked fine until it stopped working. The logic analyzer would just stop working and random characters would appear everywhere on the screen.
At the bottom of the rear panel there is a 8 position switch. Most of it is used to assign an address to the logic analyzer but it can also enable the self-test of the logic analyzer.
Obviously the logic analyzer passed the self-test… then it stopped working with random characters on the screen.
The first self-test run told me that the logic analyzer passed the RAM and ROM tests. I run the self-test again and again getting only random characters. Looking very closely, I saw that maybe the logic analyzer were trying to print on the screen that the RAM test did not pass.
Garbage on the screen… yes, bad RAM looked like a probable culprit.
A pdf copy of the service manual was easy to locate. 507 pages with everything you need to know about the 1630G (and 1630A, 1630D, 1631A, 1631D).
The first question that the manual answered was that everything screen-related was happening on the CPU Board. The second question the manual answered was that, indeed, bad RAM would explain why I saw garbage on the screen.
I opened the logic analyzer and everything seemed fine. I didn’t really expect to see something amiss. Locating the RAM (A3U3A, A3U3B, A3U3C, A3U3D, A3U4A, A3U4B, A3U4B, A3U4C, A3U4D) on the CPU Board was easy. A quick check with a DMM told me that the power rails were fine.
I wasn’t still sure if the problem were the RAM ics but I checked what they were.
They were manufacturer part number 1818-3059, IC NMOS 65636 (64k) DYN RAM 150-NS 3-S.
This was what was written on the manual. On the CPU Board, the chips were marked as NEC D4164C.
Good. I wasn’t still sure which IC was bad (there are eight of them) but I decided to just buy enough chips and change them all as they were rather cheap.
After unsoldering the RAM I decided that I didn’t want to unsolder it again if something went wrong or if the problem wasn’t the RAM, so I soldered nice tulip ic sockets.
With the new RAM, everything worked fine.

Ligh a cigarette, and fill your mouth with smoke (without swallowing or inhaling smoke).
Insert a straw into the solution.
Without releasing the smoke, insert the straw into your mouth and slowly blow out the bubble. Get a luxurious smoky bubble.
Blow out a bubble in the same way just your mouth should be filled with smoke.
This habit can seem to be funny. But this is a nice demonstration of smoking skills.
